Washington state law requires you to call 811 two business days before digging, and this requirement applies to homeowners as well. According to RCW 19.122.031, there is an exemption where homeowners dig up soil not more than 12 inches deep. Despite that, septic lines usually sit deeper than that, so you still need to call 811 first.

Septic system problems can be very similar to a freeze but be caused by something else. A saturated drain field, a septic tank that's overdue for pumping, or a clogged effluent filter can all cause slow drains, gurgling, and even sewage backing up into the house. The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency notes septic systems can back up as a result of snowmelt/rain saturating the soil treatment system with no ice involved. If multiple fixtures are backing up during freezing weather, reduce water use and have the system diagnosed rather than trying to confirm a freeze by running hot water.

How to Keep the Same Line From Freezing Again

A line that has frozen once is likely to freeze in the same location each year until there is a change in the environment. The following steps can help to avoid this occurrence:

  • Add insulation, such as rigid foam board or pipe insulation, over any areas where the line is shallow or exposed
  • Put a layer of mulch or hay on top of the tank and drainfield before the ground freezes
  • Install heat tape on exposed sections or on runs indoors and in crawlspaces where the pipe is accessible
  • If household water use has dropped off, go back to normal, spread-out use instead of letting the house sit with the taps untouched for days
  • Ensure that downspouts don’t flow towards the drain field in order for the soil not to get wet

In the latter case, it's likely that the pipes are not deep enough or insulation is compromised.

An Arlington Backup That Looked Simple Until Testing Found a Buried Line Problem
