The drain field. In a full system replacement, the drain field (site evaluation, design, excavation, drain rock, distribution pipes, and inspection) accounts for the majority of the total project cost. A tank can be replaced for $6,000 to $14,000. A new drain field adds $10,000 to $30,000 or more to that number depending on system type, soil conditions, and site complexity. Alternative drain field designs (mound systems, drip systems, pressure distribution) cost more than standard gravity trenches because of the additional engineering, equipment, and installation labor they require.
