Septic tank repair usually involves a single component failure or a couple of related ones (for example, a baffle and a riser), but not the tank or the drainfield themselves. Aerobic treatment units are more expensive to repair due to system design. Their mechanical elements, pumps, floats, or a control board can fail, and a system with moving parts has more potential for multiple failures at once.

If a recently pumped tank rises above its normal operating level, backs up, or begins surfacing wastewater again, pumping did not solve the underlying problem. A $17,303 Woodinville ATU Repair That Required Fixing Five Separate Failures

Lee’s Advantex ATU in Woodinville began overflowing again in May 2026 after pumping failed to fix the underlying problem. King County records showed the last documented inspection was in 2016. When we inspected the system in 2026, we found five separate failures that required repair.
Since the tank was flooded, we had to pump before making a diagnosis. Underneath, root intrusion had entered a riser joint, letting groundwater accumulate for years. Sludge and scum had heavily blinded the Advantex treatment media, and distribution components were also clogged. Testing found a failed discharge pump and three failed control floats. After the new pump was installed, further electrical testing showed that the control board was dead too, which meant the high-water alarm was not functioning.
