Denise called Septic Solutions again in August 2026 when the alarm horn in her garage started sounding. “In March you did a whole bunch of work for me on my septic, and today the horn is going off,” she told our dispatcher. She had already silenced the alarm but did not want to wait until the following week to find out what was wrong. What a Sand Filter Pressure Distribution System Is

Denise’s system uses a 1,000-gallon two-compartment septic tank and a separate 500-gallon pump chamber. From there, an effluent pump moves wastewater through a raised sand filter before it reaches 267 linear feet of low-pressure drainfield trenches. Because the system depends on a pump, float switches, and electrical controls, the alarm system is an important part of monitoring how it operates.

A high-level alarm is designed to warn when a float switch detects an abnormal liquid level, but the alarm itself does not identify the cause. A real high-water condition, a failed float switch, or an electrical control problem can all trigger an alarm.

In a pressure-distribution system, the pump, float switches, electrical controls, transport line, and drainfield all work together. Diagnosing an alarm therefore means checking both the hydraulic and electrical sides of the system rather than assuming the tank simply needs to be pumped.

Four Unrecorded Laterals and a Second Alarm With a Different Cause

In March, we started with an emergency pump-out to lower the wastewater level. Inspection found an approximately 12-inch scum mat in the first compartment of the 1,000-gallon septic tank, while the 500-gallon pump chamber showed no significant sludge buildup. During drawdown testing, the pump lowered the liquid level in the pump chamber by approximately 6 inches in one minute, but downstream resistance still indicated that effluent was not dispersing normally through the drainfield. With the system relieved, our crew ran a sewer camera from the sand filter transport line to trace the drainfield laterals, and that's where things got interesting. The four lateral lines underground didn't match the layout on file with Island County at all. Someone had installed them in a non-standard configuration at some point, and nobody had ever recorded it. Nobody wanted to dig up Denise's whole yard just to guess where the lines actually ran. The camera let us trace the actual layout without excavating blindly across the yard. The lines themselves were choked with root intrusion, biomat buildup, and sludge accumulation, which was the real reason for the hydraulic lock.

The August alarm was a different story. Electrical troubleshooting showed two float switches had failed and were short-circuiting, sending the alarm signal even though water levels in both tanks were normal. The existing single-panel setup had no way to isolate that fault, so every glitch reached the horn in Denise's garage. Our crew trenched new conduit, mounted two separate NEMA-rated exterior alarm panels to provide better separation of the system's monitoring and control functions, replaced every float switch in the system with new mercury-free units, and tested the whole setup before calling it done.

A pump had previously been replaced in December 2024. During the final August 2026 phase, the team installed a new sand filter effluent pump and inline check valve to keep pressure delivery to the filter bed steady and stop backflow into the pump chamber. On the final visit, we hand-delivered the updated as-built drawings, the county inspection reports, Denise's receipts, and her new maintenance agreement directly to her house so none of it would end up lost in the mail.

Why Emergency Pumping Was Only the First Step

Emergency pumping lowered the wastewater level and relieved the immediate pressure on Denise’s system, but it did not correct the restriction downstream. Testing showed that the pump could move liquid, while the drainfield was still accepting effluent too slowly because the lateral lines were heavily restricted by root intrusion, biomat, and sludge buildup.

The repair focused on restoring the existing drainfield instead of replacing it. A distribution box that had initially been considered a possible problem was inspected during the work and did not require replacement.

The team also hand-delivered Denise’s updated as-built drawings, county inspection reports, receipts, and maintenance agreement. She had an updated record of the actual drainfield layout and a recurring maintenance plan in place for future service. When the work wrapped up, Denise simply thanked the team.

This job shows why a septic alarm should be treated as a symptom. Denise’s March and August alarms sounded similar inside the house, but they came from different failures. Diagnosing a pumped sand filter system means checking more than whether the pump turns on.
